ITEM DISRUPTION – LETTUCE

All Salinas and Santa Maria growing areas were heavily affected by the major heat wave and rainy weather conditions two weeks ago. The heat affected the plants by causing tip and outer leaf burn which we have been seeing for the last week. Then, the rain soon after made the crops rot. Weather is not the only culprit to blame, growing areas are seeing yield losses due to invasive pathogens and plant viruses. Both of these factors caused a significant amount of acres to be plowed and not used for packing boxes, putting a major strain on the supply. Unfortunately, there are not many remedies to take care of these viruses besides plowing the fields and starting over. We will see crops move to Yuma, AZ around November, but that is still a few weeks away. All leaf lettuce including green leaf, butter, gem, romaine, romaine hearts, and iceberg are being affected. This will also put a strain on the pre washed and prepared items such as shredded lettuce and green leaf filets. Broccolini, broccoli crown and broccoli florets are also heavily impacted as they are also grown in these affected areas.
