STATE OF THE MARKET:

Finally feeling like fall… Weather is changing, leaves are changing, and our inventory is changing. Cooler weather and rain will help with the lettuce crops in the Salinas Valley although we believe we are all the way done with local Gem & Romaine we are looking forward to what’s in store for the next weeks and months to come.

Organic & Commodity Eggs: Avian Flu or HPAI Virus has made a big impact on the farms causing prices to rise. Not to worry though: The United States has the strongest avian influenza surveillance program in the world. Through an ongoing bird surveillance program, APHIS collects and tests large numbers of samples from birds in North America to ensure our safety.

California Lettuces: We have felt the relief this past week after a long one full of shorts and subs. The INVS virus has taken a toll amongst farmers up and down the state, completely destroying their crops. Thus causing what they have left to sky rocket in price just so they can stay afloat. In the coming weeks we will see relief from Santa Maria and Oxnard. Please stay patient during these times. We are working with farmers closely to help keep your walk ins full and customers happy.

FEATURED FARM OF THE WEEK:

Happy Boy Farms is based near Watsonville and tends to multiple plots of lands located in neighboring counties. Marin French – Triple cream brie – 100% fresh milk from Manchega sheep grazing in the Spanish region of La Mancha. This cheese has a particularly nutty, full flavor with a semi-hard texture. This traditional Spanish food has matured for six months, giving it a richer, distinctive taste.
